Horst Rittel, who pioneered wicked problems and design rationale (DR), was my mentor. I have been working continuously on design rationale theory, methods and technologies since 1975. In 1978 and 1984 I created the first two hypertext systems designed to support the capture, management and delivery of design rationale. I later integrated DR support into Computer Aided Design software. I am currently working on revising wicked problems theory and design rationale to better fit them to the realities of 21st Century design of software and physical artifacts such as consumer products, buildings and cities. I am also working on software for detecting the implicit structure of rationale in transcripts of informal discussions by designers.
