Profile Information

About me:
I first became aware of wicked problems and IBIS in the mid 1980s. I was a Mechanical Engineering design professor studying how engineers design products. My thinking over the years matured from designing things, to the process of designing things, to the decisions made during the process of designing things. In 1991 I wrote a text, The Mechanical Design Process which is now in its 4th edition. It is used at many unviersities to teach engineers about process best practices.
Since 1995 I have been developing decision support tools based on a combination of MAUT, IBIS, CogSci, Taguchi's methods and Bayesian math. My compnay is Robust Decisions (www.robustdecisions.com) and I have a book on the subject "Making Robust Decisions". The main points we try to make are 1) all information is uncertain, incomplete, confilicting and changing in time; 2) most decisions in business and industry are made by a team of people with different values and knowledge and 3) there is value in strucuted methods for many wicked problems. We have software to support this philosophy. We have applied our methods to global warming, engineering, governement intelligence and other areas.
