A recipient of the Turing Award, the National Medal of Technology and a couple of dozen other highest honors, Douglas Engelbart (1925-2013) was recognized with some of the highest honors an inventor could receive. As the progenitor of word processing, outliners, windows, teleconferencing, intranets, bitmapped screens, hypertext, hypermedia, groupware, wikiness, and email... Doug saw into the future and realized the way computers could be created and used for the betterment of humanity.

Yet – even though his vision and accomplishments prompted Alan Kay to ask “What will the Silicon Valley do when they run out of Doug’s ideas?” – Doug felt as if the world had missed the point. When asked by Sam Hahn in 2010 what percentage of his vision had been realized in practice, Doug answered: “3.6%”.

If so: what is that elusive “96.4%”? The following quote from Doug may provide a clue:

“Many years ago, I dreamed that people were talking seriously about the potential of harnessing a technological and social nervous system to improve the IQ of our various organizations. What if, suddenly, in an evolutionary sense, we evolved a super new nervous system to upgrade our collective social organisms? Then I dreamed that we got strategic and began to form cooperative alliances of organizations, employing advanced networked computer tools and methods to develop and apply new collective knowledge.”

With this in mind, we are launching the Program for the Future Challenge (#pftfc) at a workshop at Google’s headquarters in Mountain View on December 9, 2013 inspired by the questions:

What is the remaining “96.4%”? And how might humanity bring it to life?

The aim is active and ambitious: the PFTF Challenge will focus on hosting a set of demos to be presented in 2018 on the 50th anniversary of Engelbart’s famous 1968 demo with the aim of shaping the future of humanity and technology in the extraordinary way that The Mother of All Demos has shaped the last 50 years. The Challenge is envisioned as a collaborative ‘uncompetition’, in which the demo project teams augment each other’s progress by sharing insights and learning from one another.

This short MIT-produced video and interview with Tim van Gelder illustrate why the study of Doug Engelbart’s example, vision and legacy is such an apt way to invite a new generation to venture together collaboratively, imaginatively, creatively, and iteratively in pursuit of a better future for humanity.

Note: The day's event is scheduled to finish in time to allow participants to attend the beautiful celebration of Doug's life and work being held in the evening at the Computer History Museum.
Mapping a Planet Under Pressure 2012tag:globalsensemaking.net,2012-03-25:2052744:BlogPost:311692012-03-25T20:03:33.000ZDavid Pricehttp://globalsensemaking.net/profile/DavidPrice

Peter and I will be working with the Independent's readers—and anyone who would like to join us in the process—to develop a series of interrelated debate maps exploring the key public policy and political questions facing Obama as he prepares for office.

We will also be drawing on Obama's published policy agenda and public statements.

To begin to seed the series, we have mapped Philip Bobbitt’s article The flag-waving is over. This is how the president can change the world (examining some of the international policy options open to Obama), and Leonard Doyle’s Obama Starts to Build a ‘Team of Rivals’ (considering whether Obama should appoint Hillary Clinton as his Secretary of State).

You can see the opening map on The Independent's website here.

The journey was memorable too, for the multiple meetings it afforded with fellow global sensemakers, and for the dialogue and promise that flowed through those meetings.

To recap, for those new to the endeavour, the twin perceptions underpinning the global sensemaking network are that:

(i) humanity faces an emerging mess of systemic global challenges—such as, climate change, poverty, peak oil, population pressure, water shortages, declining biodiversity, and failing food supply—that are the product of patterns of thinking and behaviour that no longer make sense.

(ii) we need new tools of thought if we are to adapt to the scale and complexity of these challenges; tools that augment individual intelligence with the structured insights of many minds.

We are collaborating, with anyone who wants to join us, to accelerate the development and implementation of those tools.

A big idea emerged on Saturday evening from the preceding flow of dialogue with Mark Aakhus, Peter Baldwin, Simon Buckingham Shum, Jeff Conklin, Bob Horn, Luca Iandoli, Mark Klein, Anna De Liddo, George Mobus, Jack Park, Jack Paulus, Al Selvin, Brian Sullivan, Andy Streich, and Mark Szpakowski—the kind of idea that has no single author and that is a product of the co-mindedness and co-presence of all.

In essence, the idea is to:

(1) Distil and map humanity’s current best understanding (from all sides of the debate) of the problems and potential responses to the social mess of environmental, energy and economic challenges that we face in the build up to the UN conference on climate change in Copenhagen in 2009.

(2) Embody the map of this material in two three-dimensional spaces (off- and on-line) that the relevant political leaders, policy makers, and rest of us can explore in a highly immersive and intellectually and viscerally compelling form. One embodiment will fill a large event arena with the map on the floor forming branching pathways that lead the participants through the problem / solution space supported by a rich array of multimedia exhibits. The second will build on the first in an online, explorable, immersive, and continuously updatable 3D-space akin to Second Life.

(3) Draw together the leading scientists, stakeholders, politicians, policy makers, mappers, programmers, event managers, artists and funders necessary to deliver on the promise of this idea.

The scale and complexity of the challenges we face require an unprecedented, concentrated, creative response of a kind that lies beyond the scope of conventional policy making approaches and patterns. Work is starting within the group to assemble the necessary talents to realise this ambitious goal: and there is an open invitation to join us.

There is little time to lose.
UPDATE:

In the best traditions of the Democratic Party, the longlist of names suggested on the Forum resulted in a wide distribution of votes and no clear endorsement across the group (see chart below).

To help clarify the signal, I suggest that we vote again today on the following poll:
UPDATE:

In the best traditions of the Democratic Party, the longlist of names suggested on the Forum resulted in a wide distribution of votes and no clear endorsement across the group (see chart below).

To help clarify the signal, I suggest that we vote again today on the following poll:

Earth Issues (26%) and Global Sensemaking (21%) were the two leading candidates from the first round of polling, and I have included a "Neither" option in case the underlying signal from the group is "start again".

I hope that this is a constructive and fair response to the voting pattern observed yesterday—but if you disagree please don't hesitate to raise this below.

Voting on the second round closes today at 11:59 pm GMT (Saturday 10th May).

NOTES:

(1) You may vote for one option only in this round of voting.

(2) I suggest that we use the .net extension (if available) and secure/redirect the .com .org extensions (where possible).

(3) If the proposer of the winning name is happy for me to do so, I'll purchase the name on the group's behalf immediately after voting closes, and aim to set up the new domain over the weekend. If the proposer of the winning name would prefer to do this his/herself just let me know and we'll co-ordinate over the weekend.

(4) I suggest that we switch from private to public group status with the adoption of the new name / URL. If anyone objects to this please flag this in a comment below.Conference call follow-up activities...tag:globalsensemaking.net,2008-05-06:2052744:BlogPost:16452008-05-06T18:00:00.000ZDavid Pricehttp://globalsensemaking.net/profile/DavidPrice
Mark Aakhus has created three excerpts from Jeff's conference call map (which I have uploaded as images in the photos section of the Ning site), all of which are available to edit and view via the HC4D Citrix Compendium site. The three excerpts cover:
> Group Direction

> Next Steps

> Jeff's "200-experts" thought experiment
There are also three suggested action points arising for all members of the group:
There are also three suggested action points arising for all members of the group:

(1) Log-on to the Citrix Compendium site using your log-in details and explore the HC4D map. If you haven't received, or no longer have, your log-in details, please alert Mark and he will email your details to you.

(2) Add comments and suggestions to the three excerpts; preferably directly onto the Citrix Compendium maps. If you encounter any difficulties with this, you can also leave feedback and suggestions as comments to this blog post; however, as part of the rationale for the process is to learn more about Citrix Compendium's capabilities as a tool for facilitating this kind of group interaction, please experiment with the Citrix Compendium system first.

(3) Offer feedback on the process of using Citrix Compendium as tool for this purpose.

It would be great if everyone could have a first bash at the above by Monday 12th May.

Thank you.
I don't need to say anything about the urgency of the problem facing us.

What I want to do is highlight an emerging activity stream tackling one of the most pressing challenges concerning the infrastructure we have for working together on contentious problems:

> What socio-technical infrastructure will enable diverse stakeholders to contribute, and contest in principled ways, their views on climate change issues?

> How can it be both usable and powerful, providing useful services (e.g. visualizations, summaries, alerts, connections and analyses of the debate) for different stakeholders?

Human-centred computing perspectives will unpack this "grand challenge" in many ways, but also need to talk to the other communities engaged with this or similar challenges, such as e-Democracy and Online Deliberation.

So, I'm running this flag up the mast to invite interest if you want to engage and coordinate efforts around the specific challenge of climate change.

As I write, I am about to head to the CHI 2008 Sensemaking Workshop, which is bringing together a fantastic spectrum of people, some of whom I hope will be interested in this: sensemaking methodologies and tools will be an integral part of the way in which evidence is martialled and deployed in deliberations.

I am also in discussions with several other groups working on large-scale deliberation and argumentation infrastructures, including David Price [DebateGraph], Jeff Conklin [Cognexus], Mark Klein [MIT CCI], Jerry Glen [Millennium Project, WFUNA], Ann Macintosh [U. Leeds], Mark Aakhus [U. Rutgers], Jack Park [SRI] and Chris Reed [U. Dundee].

I don't know what may emerge from this, but if you like the colour of the flag, email me, spread the word, and we'll see what happens!
