this virtual stuff is addictive - i think i should be busy doing something real...
  • GeoffA

i'm headed out of the office now to the So. CO Sustainable Communities Conference... i'll mostly be tied up with that for the next couple of days... will get on-line at home tonight, after a Board meeting for CVAE... later...
  • GeoffA

long day... 23 miles on the bike... never got above 30 degrees today... man, this weather, it's like November or something!
  • GeoffA

i remember one particular November in Durango with morning temperatures in single digits or negatives for over three weeks... that was back in the day when i went out for 6-8 mile run every morning... frosty beard days. by comparison, Colorado Springs is 'banana belt'. but biking when it's cold is another thing entirely: to warm up you ride harder. that only increases the wind chill... you work-up a sweat climbing hills and freeze coming down.
  • GeoffA

we have dry to spare... if we could export dry CO would have it made. but, as i grew up in Chicago, i know humid, too. i'll take dry any day.
going out to ride some hills on a bright sunny day!
  • GeoffA

we watched the Maddow-Redford interview... i'll contact congress & the pres-elect... they always listen to me (especially our local congress-guy Doug Lamebrain er, Lambourn).

Well, if sense of humor is required, I'm here :)

It was your colorful DNA image that came up in a Google search for a good one that got me by happy happenstance to this network. I was rereading a paper on Dialogue I'd written a few years ago and found myself wondering about the technical aptness of a DNA metaphor I used and started searching for answers to my question. And here I am hours later LOL, playing with my newfound dialogic friends. What is your perspective on dialogue, Lynn?

    Lynne
  • Lynne Johnson

Please tell me about this special DNA...

As to the relief of a different subject matter RE dialogue. I know you dialogue all the time as a geek, and I have a particular curiosity about whether and how dialogue at a distance/mediated dialogue/dialogue in a low-touch environment differs from high-touch face-to-face sustained dialogic communication.

Dialogue/Appreciative Inquiry has been a passion of mine for years and years, and like poetry, took a back seat to my day jobs which largely kept me where the rubber hits the road and starts to fray eg low-income neighborhoods and race relations. I've quite recently promised myself we've had enough of that! and am reinventing myself, taking off into in the world of, for example, Dialogue on Wicked Problems and dialogues with geeks in cyberspace :) I've leaped from the proverbial ledge and am praying that the platform or pair of wings appears!

Going to post a paper on dialogue that I wrote, basically for fun, but also to turn in to two grad classes that I was sitting in on in '05, again, for fun. I adhered to some strictures eg assigned length, but veered way out of the bounds of academe in other ways. Sense of humor required everywhere!
  • Lynne Johnson

hmmmm back. have to go too. paper is very basic but hope it'll get dialogue going. am i in a distinct minority as a non-geek new networker herein? lynne
  • Lynne Johnson

ah ha. thanks for the info.
  • Lynne Johnson

Thanks. I was bushed when I posted that, and actually just elaborated the beginning and reposted. Look forward to continued communication. Yes, my gang in grad school had a couple of us from the USofA, but were mostly from other places: Japan, Lesotho, Sudan, Portugal, Kenya, Costa Rica, Malaysia, China, Brazil, Botswana, Ecuador....you get the picture. We called ourselves The Camel, because we created classes by committee (us) which were definitely horses of another color with odd humped profiles. I was the program and curriculum development assistant to the chair and knew how to get proposals through the system and into the timetable of classes offered -- so we had fascinating topics to walk through together! They are the editorial board in my mind when I walk, talk, write, even think. I like it that way :) My old poetry group is another internal blog always in motion. As well my old OD/HRD colleagues from an annual conference, also dedicated to world peace, that used to take place here in WI. Here's hoping this net will be a welcome addition to my global mind! Lynne

"i'm a geek, but love the dna graphic as it's special dna"

You never did particularize that DNA graphic for me.... I was attracted to the rainbow colors of that Google image in particular. Now you've got me really curious! Is it a colleague's or your creation, a strand of something of import to you, spill :) if you will. Lynn with an "e"
  • Lynne Johnson

Tease! I love your sense of humor. And you still owe me, unless your last comment was cut off. Gotta go to Tai Chi. I'm back onto you when I return :) I'm very persistent.
  • Lynne Johnson

ok, you're off the hook on that.
  • Lynne Johnson

Not being a geek, I could easily overlook Google's evil ways. One of my friend's daughters works there, which is how I got on gmail in the first place. Tell me more about this.

Both. I am always interested in learning, information gathering being one part of that process. But that's not enough for me, lack's the depth I'm interested in. So to answer your question, once I am oriented to this net and how I might intersect with it, I'm interested in DOING dialogue. I've had two holographic visions of tools that could be used in dialogic process, years ago actually, but never had a technological sense of how they could be created in reality. Seeing that and such things happen is also under my interest in dialogue, alongside my actual experience using it in face-to-face situations. Does that answer, or begin to answer your question? What is underneath your wonderment?
  • Lynne Johnson

thanks . i'm tired of being such a baby geek so i think i'm going to do an internship offered hereabouts and get some savvy :) . can be done at your own pace in spare time . i've been doing little mini-immersions like that since the late 1970s when i actually learned some basic and batching, arghhh . yes, knew about china, not utube, and haven't tried twining . what's your interest in or work with dialog/ue? . i've ignore the blogs and tweets all this time, and only recently set up a facebook page because two poet friends in particular and my older godkids finally got to me on doing it
  • Lynne Johnson

one of my handfull of facebook friends, a graphic artist, sent me the following:

I encourage everyone who could use a good laugh (and who couldn't, really?) to check out Slowpoke Comics by Jen Sorensen---now a semi-finalist in the 2009 Association of Alternative Newsweeklies awards! A new toon every Monday starts your week off right with razor sharp commentary and knee-slapping humor, dagnabbit!

sense of humor required everywhere . thought you'd get a giggle

you could visit him at KRUPTOONS.com . i enjoy his drawings the most
  • Lynne Johnson

exactly! been trying to find a way to constructively tell him this so that he'd hear it and it could transform his work form the inside out ever since i met him some 10 yrs ago . maybe feedback from a relative stranger like you who nevertheless appreciates his portals drawings series would be a gift . he has a wonderful new woman in his life, now another beloved poet friend for me! and i think she may help him cross this bridge laughing LOL . he does understand that there's too much edge there, though . my godkids, on the other hand, totally get his work and love it . he should probably have been born in Japan and just recently have come of age in the world of graphics and if this were the case, i think he'd really take off
  • Lynne Johnson

hmmmm it's from, not form . arghhhh, it's hard to be a wordsmith in a cyberspace minute . anyway, at the risk of sounding juvenile, wanna be my friend? . i'm callin you out and ya better come, i'm on to you
  • Lynne Johnson

oh and ps i also think bill's stuff is waaaaaaaay too busy, too dense, but of course i love him anyway :)
  • Lynne Johnson

absolutely true! and yet he's quite actively seeking feedback right now, which is why i'd even consider it! . my writer's group taught me the value of feedback way back when, for you as a person and for your work . anyway it was just a thought or invite, no strings, except maybe in our DNA :) . or string theory . or for fish when you catch them -- just pulled out my fishing gear recently to share some with the godkids . time to eat, i'm getting loopy . bye
  • Lynne Johnson

yes, it's of course a taste thing
  • Lynne Johnson

    yes :)

now technically speaking, shall i click and add? or no

    oh my . must eat
  • Lynne Johnson

ok . this and then i eat!

i'll check out twining . i already like it metaphorically speaking . thanks

the internship, apprenticeship actually . very basic but you have to start somewhere; it's with a local geekshop, learning web design: "Industry Connection, Inc. (ICI) is a proud provider of web development services for Businesses, Organizations, Associations, and Communities, serving the web development community's needs since 1993. We specialize in the creation of websites that are a natural extension of your corporate identity, that provide excellent ROI on your investment, and pleasurable experiences for your customers.

ICI was founded on the belief that online services create a true experience of what it is to be a global citizen, while creating and maintaining a sense of community that is missing in today's busy world. ICI is committed to all human beings having access to this experience, regardless of their level of computer literacy."

    founder/owner is a friend of a friend

think i told you that every ten years or so since the 70s i leap back into cyberspace to see what i've missed as i work where the rubber hits the road (omg i'm quoting myself!) with time speeding up, it's time . the last thing i did was part-time internet customer service for lands' end to cover my benefits while consulting and doing a few LTE problem-solving stints . that stretch made me not want to be online at home because i was always at the keyboard in my workplaces . but here i am now . and instead of again repeating that i'm hungry, i'll leave you with it's being nice to get to know you, Lynn without an e
  • Lynne Johnson

ahhhh full tummy . well, presumed lynn with no e, because your comments come to me saying that "lynn" added a comment :) is that an oops or what?
  • Lynne Johnson

ok ok i'm taking liberties . they look like stings to me, those DNA strands

phish . always meant to check them out . wonder what KRUPTOONS artist Bill thinks about them . he's a drummer
  • Lynne Johnson

    LOL . click
  • Lynne Johnson

yes, well, since this is my first leap into the blogosphere, i'm a true case of there's no zealot like a convert (quote from john dean of watergate fame) and since i joined this net, and also let my arm be twisted by godkids and poetfriends into setting up a facebook page, both this past week, at the same time as i'm job searching on line ... me taking a breath ... unless i'm doing tai chi or sleeping or engaging in the little bits of contract work i'm doing to eat in the meantime, HERE I BE AT THE KEYS . it's not exactly that i'm interested in being a webdesigner, it's that it's accessible, at your won pace, and more or less an intuitive thing, much like learning BASIC or management information systems was way back when . i'm a systems thinker and that stuff attracts me . i may or may not do the apprenticeship and will be checking it out next week . they also hire from their apprentice pool though, but that's not the hook for me, an immersion is
  • Lynne Johnson

arghhh . finding safely in this world . is that possible? . i actually like quieter music than they/phish do/es, or so i imagine, maybe maybe not, it's all in my head now isn't it? . one of my friends, an Israeli by birth, is singing with an Arab/Israeli/Palestinian band tonite . one kind of music i do usually like is folk music (nationally and internationally speaking), also fusions, and at one time i played the comb-and-waxed-paper in a kitchen band (that's a good story!), and i was really good at riffing poetic while playing "Amazing Grace Used To Be Her Favorite Song" LOL just remembering -- and we weren't quiet so, so much for truth in my statements :) . i'm not sure what's with this capitalize and then don't capitalize thing i've got going here . off to do errands and stuff . soon dude . oh, so are you lynn without an e or not, my friend?
  • Lynne Johnson

thanks! i really did have those two visions of tools and i really am going with this baby geeky crawl where ever it takes me and how ever long and climb every mountain ford every stream follow every rainbow i bet you want to scream
  • Lynne Johnson

phew, that phish, oh ish . after my errands i did tai chi by lake mendota which smells like fish and that's ok with me . madison is built around lakes, the capitol square is on an isthmus between lakes mendota and monona, and the yahara river that connects them continues south and small bedroom communities are found on the next two connected lakes, plus there's another small lake in town with the university of wisconsin arboretum incl restored prairie along it; i used to work there . and she goes on and on and on :) . did you go outside?
  • Lynne Johnson

rock on, scream if it works, and i'll get on with crawling, i'm waiting for my report on those roses . i'll be at a sweat lodge all day tomorrow and seeing esty sing tonite, so you're off the hook until i get a couple job apps in and check on a friend's surgery monday . but i warned you i was persistent . as your friend, this is my ishy way of encouraging you to get a life if that's what you want . start with the roses, take a walk, flap your arms like wings as you walk and see what happens, bark like a dog and see if anyone notices . or something :)
  • Lynne Johnson

have friends, a couple o geeks, and he taught himself web design online and now does it for folks . i'll check it out . i'll see them tomorrow at the sweat i think
  • Lynne Johnson

now you know why my godkids think "Mommy" is weird but fun
  • Lynne Johnson

oh well, Mother Earth must be very thirsty! feeling better? i'll tune in at the sweat lodge and send you healing energy :)
  • Lynne Johnson

oh my . iran . see what you meant ...
  • Lynne Johnson

and oh yes, i meant to ask, where's all this rain you're experiencing? . talked to a friend yesterday who moved to kentucky a few months ago, and that's what she was describing, rain rain rain . over and out
  • Lynne Johnson

evenin' . yes, when i check in it's with bbc, a local alternative station here in town and with air america my friend esty is one of the public affairs people at the local public radio station . she and i went to the lodge together today, as we usually do, and she's very intrigued with this net and i think will join . she grew up in a kibbutz in israel, fought in the army, helped start vets for peace here locally, and supports the palestinians pleas . anyway, she's interested and is a good friend and a good woman . and we did send you good healing energy :)
  • Lynne Johnson

mornin . need a chuckle? . this has it's problems and we can talk about that, but I still laugh every time i see it . one of my daughters sent me the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wY6insZjCfU&feature=related . more later, lynn without an e . me, lynne with
  • Lynne Johnson

what's this i hear about you being a do-gooder! and getting paid for it! . i used to be a do-gooder who got paid for it too, although not as a geek so not so very lucrative . oh dear, it was my experience that personal trainwrecks go with that territory . a buddhist monk once told me he loved trains because they were so consistnet, just listen! he said, clack a clack a clack a clack . until then trains had irritated me for their loudness, land grabbing and money grubbing history . sometimes my friends make me look again at my prejudices, like the time my friend from Lesoto sighed at the beauty of the cornfields as we drive by . i saw destroyed landscape and he saw food . hope you're feeling better now . the iran of today could be the groundswell of good tomorrow . it could happen
  • Lynne Johnson

that's the trouble with email . it's so easy to misread meanings! . well yes, there IS beauty in everything, well said, or should i key, well keyed :) . i'll check out the link, thanks . i actually came very close to being a geology major instead of going into community development . back to more in front of this screen time next week . went swimming in a great trout stream pond today, washed my hair with safe for the water shampoo, cuddled someone's 6 mo old puppy, these after i helped my 84 yr old mom in her garden . life is good
  • Lynne Johnson

yep, that's me, or an aspect of me, swooning over rocks and such :) i loved the geology in co when i was there for a few weeks bumming solo in the late 90s . couldn't figure out how to make a living doing that without raping the earth so i gave up on the academics of it . thought about environmental law, too . my grandma johnson always said that she and i knew that it was the little things that mattered . you got my number! . i've been skipping the fireworks for years, but sort of want to go with my grandkids next year . this year one's in the womb and the family is out of town . other/birth daughter coming for a visit from nm next week . wish i'd hurry up and find a job! poverty is grinding! arghhh . gotta go, dinner with mom (84) . and sweat lodge again tomorrow . see you on the keys next week without' :) with the e
  • Lynne Johnson

where in the helix have you been? time to harvest the summer and feed our globally sensible friends . i'm hungry! . i'll dish a bushel o keystrokes if you're ready for a meal . where to put the plate, there's a question . the atmosphere here is pretty good :) me with e
  • Lynne Johnson

ps . it's obvious my little paper is too simple to be of any interest to this net -- but my interest in dialogue isn't going to go away any time soon so i'll hang out here on and off and see if there's a way to connect with whatever holds this all together and make a contribution . she with e again
  • Lynne Johnson

sounds familiar . i've not been emailing or networking online most of the summer . wanted to reconnect anyway . may whatever occupies you be fulfilling . the one with an e
  • Lynne Johnson

i'm sure you're right but this network was what i ran across and like you, other things have my attention now . i am having good dialogue with a network member in the UK . he's been better than i at keying the communications though . my community development background makes me sort of foolishly fearless about treading in all of the angels' territory and all of the places they fear to tread besides, because as a generalist/professional collaborator (read networker) I don't expect myself to be able to do everything else but rather to connect everybody who needs to be connected to get what needs to be done done . if that makes sense . the e
  • Lynne Johnson

sorry to be so dense, but what stuff is the pita you're referring to? .
and here here to reconnecting . particularly with winter's long cold coming . e
  • Lynne Johnson

you are my cautious conscience concerning cyberspace and thank you . there was a time I/my progressive politics may have, well did, threaten the Nixon gang and I like everyone else politically active was bugged . the closest my life comes to concerning anyone right now is (your influence again :) my godkids language which is admittedly negative and atrocious and I am on Facebook to chat with them and recently cautioned them about f-wording and the like for the many reasons it is problematic . Facebook and this is enough for me right now . I keep not using Twine because, for example, two people wanted to connect and it wasn't working and I'm unable/willing to sit at a keyboard all day anyway, much less if it's just a pita! . how did you make Twine work for you? don't forget to activate that great sense of humor of yours :) maybe even lol even if it has to be at me with an e (see my denseness in other comment arghhhh)
  • Lynne Johnson

arghhhh . better laugh A LOT:) me e
  • Lynne Johnson

OK laughter substitute needed . ever try the shakin' all over routine? stand with feet shoulder width apart and bounce lightly and rapidly up and down . even shake your head side to side so fast that your jowls jiggle . shake your hands . shake those hips . focus your attention from feet, to calves, to momma cows, and on up thru torso and shoulders, neck and head . shake it all out baby . bounce for at least 5-10 minites . clears the crud out . e
